A report in Spanish newspaper Marca claims Tottenham have joined north London rivals Arsenal in the race for highly rated Valencia winger Juan Mata.

Spurs are reportedly willing to pay 30 million euros for the Spanish Under-21 star with Harry Redknapp particularly keen on Mata.

The Spanish newspaper add that Mata would follow the trail set by David Silva who left Valencia for English football, should he join Arsenal or Tottenham. Liverpool have also been linked with the Spanish winger during the summer silly season and Barcelona could also make a move should they fail to secure Alexis Sanchez.

On Monday, widespread reports in the English press claimed Arsenal had bid 18 million pounds for Valencia winger Juan Mata but it is likely to take a much bigger fee, from Spurs or anyone else, to secure one of the most highly rated players in European football.

Since joining Valencia from Real Madrid, Mata has excelled playing regularly (appearing in over 30 La Liga campaigns in four out of five seasons) and is one of the assist kings of the Spanish league. In 2010/2011, Mata scored eight goals and provided 12 assists in 33 games. Whilst he was at Valencia, David Villa was indebted to the young winger for many of his goals.

Mata started every game for the Spain Under-21 side in Switzerland and added to his burgeoning reputation with displays full of skill and football intelligence. He would be an excellent acquisition for Tottenham and could signal the departure of Aaron Lennon who was earlier this week linked with Liverpool or Luka Modric who recently said he would be interested in a move to Chelsea.

Spurs fans would delight in a hugely talented player like Juan Mata heading to White Hart Lane but there has to be a major doubt put on this Marca report as he would likely be looking for European football. In addition, to Spurs have 30 million euros to spend? Perhaps, but not before they sell the likes of Wilson Palacios, David Bentley, Robbie Keane etc.
